One of our Renewable Gas pilot production facilities, located in Horsley Park, Western Sydney, helped demonstrate how renewable hydrogen could support NSW’s transition to a lower-emissions future. The Western Sydney Hydrogen Hub (WSHH) was established to demonstrate the role hydrogen could play in helping NSW achieve its emissions reduction targets.
Hydrogen was produced by a 500kW on-site electrolyser powered by the electricity network. Jemena purchased a GreenPower product from Origin Energy to offset the electricity used at the hub and ensure it was matched by renewable energy generation. Once injected into the existing gas network and blended with natural gas, the hydrogen could be used by homes and businesses in surrounding areas of Western Sydney.
The Western Sydney Hydrogen Hub was a $15 million renewable gas demonstration project, co-funded by Jemena and the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA). It commenced hydrogen injection into the gas network in 2021 and provided valuable operational and technical insights into the integration of renewable hydrogen within existing gas infrastructure. The project was developed as a demonstration and trial facility for hydrogen production, storage and injection into JGN’s gas distribution network. Following the successful completion of the project, these trial activities have concluded and the facility is no longer operational.
