Embedded Network

An embedded network is a private electricity network within a site, such as an apartment building, shopping centre or retirement village. The site connects to the main grid, then supplies electricity through its own wiring to the people or businesses inside.

Embedded generation in an embedded network
How the process works

Prepare your application

Gather parent NMI, child NMI, total generation capacity of embedded network, required technical details and letter of authority (if required)

Apply online

The ENO or authorised representative submits the application through MyPortal.

Technical assessment

Jemena reviews the proposal, export settings and any emergency backstop requirements.

Connection agreement

If approved, Jemena issues a connection agreement for acceptance.

Install and commission

After acceptance, the installer completes the works and commissioning.

Final connection approval

Provide commissioning evidence and Jemena confirms permission to connect.

Metering and ongoing compliance

Complete any required meter changes and maintain compliance.

Important Note

For all negotiated connection services, connection charges will apply. All SolShare and Embedded Network EG applications at Jemena goes through negotiated connection process.

*Note: for embedded networks, the EG application must be submitted for the parent NMI and must include total inverter capacity (all existing and new embedded generators for each child NMI within the embedded network, behind the parent NMI/ gate meter). Jemena only has visibility of the parent NMI and does not have visibility of child NMIs. This EG application is required to be submitted to Jemena for and on behalf of the Embedded Network Operator (ENO), and paid by the ENO, who owns the parent NMI and is responsible for all the EGs within their embedded network. The EG connection agreement is between Jemena and the ENO.

Additionally the export limit requirement for existing/installed child NMI EGs <=30kVA 3 phase, to be backstop exempt
• If installed on or after 1st Jan 2025 -> 0kVA export limit
• If installed before 1st Jan 2025 -> 5kVA per phase (15kVA 3 phase) export limit
