Benefits of solar
Uses less electricity from the grid
Rooftop solar systems generate electricity during daylight hours. When solar electricity is used in a home or business, it can reduce the amount of electricity drawn from the grid. The level of benefit varies depending on solar system size, location, weather, and when electricity is used at the property.
Supports renewable energy in Victoria
Electricity generated from rooftop solar uses sunlight, a renewable energy source. Across Victoria, rooftop solar contributes to reducing emissions from electricity generation and supports the transition to cleaner, lower‑carbon energy over time.
Export excess electricity to the local network
If a solar system generates more electricity than a household or business needs, excess electricity can be exported to the local electricity network and used by other customers nearby. Payments or feed in tariffs for exported electricity are set by electricity retailers and market arrangements, not by Jemena or other distributors.
A changing electricity network
Rooftop solar has shifted electricity networks from one way power flows to two way flows, with electricity moving both to and from homes and businesses, and the grid. This creates opportunities for more local electricity generation, while also requiring distributors like Jemena to manage the network carefully to maintain safety, reliability and power quality for all customers.

Emergency Backstop
The Victorian Government has introduced changes that require Distribution Businesses, such as Jemena, to remotely turn down (reduce) or switch off solar generation during an emergency, such as when we have a supply and demand imbalance within the electricity network. This temporary action will be taken at the direction of AEMO to protect the stability of the network.

The Solar Installers Hub provides essential information and resources for connecting rooftop solar systems to the Jemena Electricity Network, including approved inverter requirements, connection charges and guidelines. You’ll also find training on how to use Jemena’s MyPortal website to submit and manage customer solar applications.
