From 1 October 2026, amendments to the National Gas Rules will change how Jemena calculates the charges for new gas customers connecting to the network. Customers applying for a new gas connection will be required to pay the full efficient cost of connecting their property to the gas network. Previously, some connection costs could be recovered over time through network charges paid by all customers.
The change, introduced by the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC), is based on a "beneficiary pays" approach. This means the customer requesting a new connection pays for the connection, rather than costs being shared across the broader customer base. The reform is designed to provide greater transparency about connection costs and help customers make more informed energy choices.
Connection costs will vary depending on the work required to complete the connection, including factors such as location, site conditions and construction requirements. Customers will receive a quote outlining the expected costs before deciding whether to proceed. Existing gas customers are not affected by these changes, and gas connections will continue to be available across the network.
