What is a Standby Service?
A standby service involves having a qualified Jemena representative present on-site during excavation or construction work near high-pressure gas pipelines. This ensures compliance with safety regulations and allows immediate intervention if necessary.
When is Standby Required?
Standby services must be arranged when undertaking any of the following activities:
- Excavation or construction within three meters of a Secondary or Critical main.
- Work that could impact or expose underground gas assets.
- Installation of High Voltage (HV) cables near steel gas mains.
- Roadworks, tunneling, or directional drilling in the vicinity of Jemena pipelines.
- Any activity requiring prolonged exposure of the pipeline.

Jemena’s Plumbers Standby Services are designed for licensed gas fitters who need temporary gas isolation when working on low and medium-pressure gas pipes. This service allows for safe relocation or installation of meters and path valves.
How It Works
- Licensed gas fitters must submit an application via the Jemena Gas Portal.
- Once processed, two Jemena technicians will visit the site to isolate the live gas supply.
- The isolation lasts for up to 90 minutes to allow for necessary works.
Important Notes:
- This service applies only to low and medium-pressure networks.
- Work must comply with the Gas Supply (Consumer Safety) Regulations.
- Standby requests should be lodged in advance to allow for scheduling.
