Why the Network is Evolving

Powering the way you live - today and tomorrow.

Electricity has always been part of daily life. But how we generate, use, and share power is changing fast.

More people are putting solar on their roofs, buying electric cars, and looking for ways to cut emissions at home. At the same time, the country is moving away from coal and embracing new sources of energy like solar and wind.

To keep up, the electricity network is evolving. Here are five key changes that are shaping the future of how power is delivered to homes and businesses.

Electricity-wise, we’re fully focused on the Future Five

Power is going both ways (Decentralisation)

Electricity used to only flow from big power stations to your home. Now, homes with solar panels are generating their own power, and even sending it back into the grid. It’s become a two-way street.

Moving to new energy sources (Decarbonisation)

Australia is phasing out coal and reducing emissions. That means more energy from sources like solar and wind will be entering the grid. We're upgrading the network to support this shift in how electricity is generated.

Powering more with Electricity (Electrification)

From heating and hot water to cooktops and vehicles, more things in Australian homes are now electric. This means our network must carry more electricity, especially at peak times.

The Rise of Energy Storage

Home batteries and community batteries are becoming more common. They store electricity for when it's needed, like during the evening or in a blackout, making the grid more stable and reliable.
