Electricity Meter Safety Inspection
and Replacement Program

Jemena Electricity Networks is upgrading older electricity meters as part of our Electricity Meter Safety Inspection and Replacement Program. Inspections and meter replacements will be carried out between November 2025 and December 2026, on selected days between 7:30am and 5:00pm.

This is a regulatory requirement introduced through changes to the National Electricity Rules. This program ensures electricity meters across our network meet current safety and compliance requirements and continue to provide a safe and reliable electricity supply.

What a digital meter means for you?

Digital meters are gradually replacing older electricity meters because they make managing energy simpler and more convenient for households. With a digital meter, you can expect:

  • Bills based on what you actually use, helping avoid estimated bills
  • No meter reader visits, as your meter can be read remotely
  • Clearer insights into your energy use, making it easier to manage consumption and costs
  • Access to new energy options for eligible customers, such as energy tracking apps, smart appliances, and battery solutions

What does the meter replacement involve?

To keep your electricity safe and reliable, we’ll need to visit your property twice:

  1. Safety inspection (no power interruption)
Our authorised contractors will visit your property to check your electricity meter and switchboard for any safety issues, defects, or equipment that doesn’t meet current standards. This inspection won’t interrupt your power supply, you won’t notice any change during the visit.

2. Meter replacement (short power outage)
Once your site passes the safety check, we’ll return for a second visit to install your new electricity meter.

  • There will be a brief power outage (about 10–30 minutes) while we swap the meter.
  • You’ll get at least 4 business days’ notice before this visit, so you can plan ahead.
  • All new meters are Victorianendorsed AMI meters, meeting the latest safety and compliance standards.

Important Safety Information: If we identify a safety issue with customer-owned equipment during our inspection, we will arrange and pay reasonable costs for a licensed electrician to make necessary repairs prior to scheduling your meter replacement.

What should you do now?

Please make sure your electricity meter and switchboard are easy to access. If your meter is behind a locked gate, contact us so we can arrange a time that works for you.
