Lenaghan Lateral

Jemena is proposing to modify the existing infrastructure approval for the Killingworth to Kooragang Island Pipeline to allow for bi-directional flow of gas between the Jemena Gas Network (JGN) Northern Trunk Pipeline and the approved Kurri Kurri Power Station (KKPS), currently being developed by Snowy Hydro, via the APA’s proposed Kurri Kurri Lateral Pipeline Project (KKLP) which is approved via a separate development application.

The Lenaghan Lateral project involves the construction of a 450m long buried gas pipeline extending  between the proposed meter station and the Northern Trunk Pipeline approximately 15 km west of Newcastle within the City of Newcastle local government area.

Construction is planned to commence in March 2024, with commissioning of the project expected by the end of 2024.

Jemena will work closely with the local community to ensure they are informed as Jemena progresses the Lenaghan Lateral project.

Approvals and Licencing

A Modification to Jemena’s Killingworth to Kooragang Island Pipeline for the project has been approved by the Department of Planning and Environment (DPE).

The modification is required to allow for bi-directional flow of gas between the Jemena Gas Network (JGN) Northern Trunk Pipeline and the approved Kurri Kurri Power Station (KKPS), currently being developed by Snowy Hydro, via the APA’s proposed Kurri Kurri Lateral Pipeline Project (KKLP) which is approved via a separate development application. The approval for Jemena’s Lenaghan Lateral can be viewed via the DPE Planning Portal.

Jemena lodged an application to vary the licence area for the Killingworth to Kooragang Island Pipeline (Pipeline Licence No. 8) for the Lenaghan Lateral project under Section 18 of the Pipelines Act in Q4 2023.
